Health and Human Sciences

Within the context of Loyola Marymount University's (LMU) mission statement, the Health and Human Sciences (HHS) program strives to cultivate educated students in the subjects of HHS with quality classroom preparation for graduate schools and professional careers as well as relevant clinical experience in health related fields. Such fields include, but are not limited to, athletic training, nursing, physical and occupational therapy, and physician assistant. The program takes pride in having faculty who prepare students in a positive environment that encourages the development of the whole person.

Student Learning Outcomes for HHS Programs:

A.  Students will be able to demonstrate basic understanding and appreciation of the human body's relationship to health and wellness through science, theory and application. 
B. Students will be able to demonstrate effective communication skills necessary to explain to others effectively and accurately about human health and wellness in a variety of organizational and institutional settings.
C. Students will be able to demonstrate critical‐thinking skills and the ability to access and critically evaluate relevant health information and resources.
D. Students will be able to demonstrate the interpersonal skills required to work cooperatively with diverse individuals and groups on issues related to the human condition.
E. Students will be able to demonstrate basic understanding and appreciation of cultural, philosophical and professional considerations related to health and wellness.
F.  Students will be able to demonstrate a worldview that integrates spiritual and ethical values with their vocational calling.
G. Students will have clear career goals and demonstrate practical preparation for their career.

The 2011-2012 academic year will be one of transition from the past Department of Natural Science to the current Department of Health and Human Sciences. Currently, the HHS houses the following programs and majors:

Bachelor of Science in Natural Science
      General Science Emphasis (Discontinued. No longer accepting new students)
      Pre-Physical/Occupational Therapy Emphasis (Discontinued Spring 2012. Students currently enrolled    
      will be allowed to complete program. BS in health and Human Sciences to replace  the current PPOT emphasis, see link below.)
