Below is a list and description of tests which we are capable of performing in our laboratory.

  • Maximal Aerobic Capacity (VO2 max testing)

    Maximal Aerobic Capacity (VO2 max testing)
    We will use either the treadmill or a stationary bike to complete a maximal aerobic test, measuring maximal aerobic capacity. This can be used to evaluate aerobic performance abilities and to track progress over the course of a training program. The test will also evaluate fuel utilization during exercise, identify anaerobic threshold, assess maximal heart rate, and include ECG monitoring. This test is only available to persons with low to moderate risk for coronary heart disease; a screening will be completed.

  • Pulmonary Testing

    ‌Pulmonary Testing
    This assessment evaluates lung function by measuring vital capacity, forced expiratory volume, and peak expiratory flow. This test can be performed alone or before and after VO2 max or submaximal exercise testing to evaluate risk for exercise-induced asthma.

  • Submaximal Aerobic Test

    ‌Submaximal Aerobic Test
    We can use the treadmill or a stationary bike to complete a submaximal aerobic test, predicting maximal aerobic capacity. This can be used to evaluate aerobic performance abilities and to track progress over the course of an exercise program. The test will also evaluate fuel utilization during exercise, predict maximal heart rate, and include ECG monitoring.

  • Bone Density Test

    Bone Density Test
    We use a dual-energy x-ray absorptiometer (DXA) to perform a bone scan to measure bone density at the hip, spine, forearm, and/or of the whole body. This test can be used by your physician to diagnose osteoporosis, a skeletal condition of low bone mass which puts someone at risk for fracture. The scan of the whole body also gives muscle mass, fat mass and percent body fat information.

  • Body Composition

    ‌Body Composition
    Percent body fat can be evaluated using skinfold calipers or by completing a whole body bone scan. The skinfold caliper method will require measuring a fold of skin with underlying adipose at seven sites: chest, underarm, upper back, back of the arm, hip, abdomen, and thigh. These measurements are then applied to an equation matching your age, gender, and ethnicity to calculate percent body fat. The whole body DXA scan reports muscle mass, fat mass and percent body fat information.

  • Muscular Strength

    ‌Muscular Strength
    The Humac isokinetic dynamometer can be used to evaluate muscular strength and power in several muscle groups.

  • Anaerobic Power (vertical jump)

    ‌Anaerobic Power (vertical jump)
    Anaerobic power abilities can be evaluated by performing a vertical jump test using the Vertec equipment.

  • Anaerobic Power (Wingate test)

    ‌Anaerobic Power (Wingate test)
    The Wingate test is a maximal sprint on the bicycle which is used to evaluate peak power, average power, and decline in power across the 30-sec bout. This information is useful for anaerobic athletes looking to begin a training program and track improvements in anaerobic power.

  • Resting Metabolic Rate

    ‌Resting Metabolic Rate
    The Viasys metabolic cart can be used to evaluate calories needed to maintain resting metabolic rate. This information can be used to set dietary goals for weight gain or weight loss.

  • Nutrition Assessment

    ‌Nutrition Assessment
    We can evaluate your dietary intake by having you keep a food journal. Dietary intake will be assessed using a high-quality research software and recommendations will be made while identifying strengths and weaknesses of your diet.

  • Senior Balance and Mobility Assessment

    Senior Balance and Mobility Assessment
    Battery of assessments to measure multiple dimensions of balance and mobility including: center of gravity control, multisensory assessment, postural strategy, gait pattern, strength and endurance, and flexibility. Balance and mobility assessment allows for establishment of baselines and comparison to normative data. The participant will learn about his/her risk of falling due to any balance or mobility impairments.
