Hot Topics in K-12 Mathematics Education: Data Science and Mathematics for Social Justice
Join Dr. Christina Eubanks-Turner, associate professor of mathematics, and Dr. Anna Bargagliotti, professor of mathematics, for a 2.5 hour seminar discussing two important and hot topics in education today. The workshop will be offered on two consecutive Mondays (see below) from 5 - 7:30 p.m. PDT. Participants can select to attend Session 1 on Data Science or Session 2 on the Mathematics of Social Justice. The workshop will close each Monday with a panel of speakers on each topic.
Abstract: In this seminar, we will discuss the topics of Data Science and the Mathematics of Social Justice in education. We will provide tangible examples that can be directly used in secondary mathematics classrooms. The goal of these seminars is to inform participants of national- and state-level developments on the horizon in these two key areas as well as provide teachers with materials that can help supplement their teaching practice.
These seminars are sponsored by the Loyola Marymount University Master of Arts in Teaching Mathematics Program. This dynamic program provides rich opportunities for secondary school teachers to broaden their background in mathematical science and to apply this knowledge to their current pedagogy. Our faculty are nationally-recognized experts in best practices for optimal student learning in mathematics and statistics.
For a limited time, the MAT program is offering $2,000 enrollment scholarships for teachers who start the program this summer.
