Strategic Plan (2021-2026)

Seaver College Vision. We will form a new generation of reflective, collaborative, compassionate, and ethical leaders who will make a positive impact in addressing the vital and ever-changing challenges facing our rapidly evolving global society.

Seaver College Core Values: Our strategic plan is shaped by our core values. Each strategic goal includes action items that directly connect to our core values.

  • a) Student success. We value and reaffirm our commitment to providing students with an integrated educational experience, to supporting and enhancing student success, and to producing STEM learners and graduates whose contributions rooted in ethics will have a positive impact on the world.
  • b) Community that celebrates diversity, equity and inclusion. We are committed to developing a culture that values, celebrates and provides equitable opportunity, and enables learning, discovery and innovation in an affirmative and supportive
  • c) LMU’s mission. We value and reaffirm our commitment to the care of the whole person and our planet grounded in the mission of our university: education of the whole person, encouragement of learning, and service of faith and promotion of justice.

Goal 1: Strengthen Seaver’s prominence/reputation and impact. Seaver College will become the college of choice for students aspiring to make the world a better place through distinctive curricular and co-curricular STEM educational experiences.

Objectives and Action Items

  1. Diversify and strategically grow our student population
    • 1.1 Develop and implement effective new student recruitment strategies
    • 1.2 Strengthen and expand marketing and recruitment efforts for graduate and certificate programs
    • 1.3 Collaborate with local industry to develop flexible, integrated and easily accessible (graduate) courses or certificates
  2. Deepen and expand outstanding professional experience opportunities for students
    • 2.1 Develop and implement sustainable infrastructure to increase partnerships with local industries
    • 2.2 Increase support for student-faculty research through expanded resources and opportunities
  3. Build and promote a more diverse, inclusive, and equitable learning environment
    • 3.1 Provide opportunities to become familiar with and engage in DEI dialogue
    • 3.2 Equip faculty and staff to develop approaches for assessing DEI in the curriculum and learning/working environment
    • 3.3 Incorporate best practices into the curriculum and learning/working experiences that promote ethics and diversity, equity and inclusion
  4. Build a world- class engineering facility
    • 4.1 Actively engage faculty and staff in envisioning future research and learning opportunities in the facility
    • 4.2 Fundraise for the facility.

Goal 2: Deepen local and global engagement. Seaver College will deepen opportunities, collaborations and partnerships at the local and global level which facilitate professional and ethical development, contribute to scholarly activity, and aid in recruitment and retention of students and faculty.

Objectives and Action Items

  1. Create transformative opportunities to integrate STEM in engaged learning in the local or global context
    • 1.1 Review and assess existing Seaver local and global engaged learning programs and implement changes as needed
    • 1.2 Develop STEM-focused service learning and social justice opportunities locally and globally
    • 1.3 Develop partnerships that further strengthen our curriculum offerings
  2. Integrate practitioners who bring perspective, skill and expertise acquired in industry to teach, mentor, and direct professional-level projects
    • 2.1 Establish and implement Professor of Practice

Goal 3: Develop new interdisciplinary opportunities to address societal challenges. Solutions to a better future for our planet require integrated creativity and innovation rooted in STEM in partnership with other disciplines. Seaver College will nurture, increase support for, and advance visibility (internal and external) of interdisciplinary teaching, scholarship, and engagement.

Objectives and Action Items

  1. Create infrastructure to germinate and nurture innovative interdisciplinary projects
    • 1.1 Investigate and address structural needs for sustainability of interdisciplinary opportunities
    • 1.2 Create seed funding opportunities for creative and innovative interdisciplinary projects
    • 1.3 Incentivize and support (interdisciplinary) grant writing, proposal submission, and successful grant execution
  2. Increase visibility and promote interest in interdisciplinary work
    • 2.1 Sponsor interdisciplinary symposia or colloquia that bring together persons from multiple and/or diverse disciplines
  3. Increase opportunity and depth of interdisciplinary experiences
    • 3.1 Develop and entrench opportunities that convene stakeholders from diverse majors and colleges in shared projects involving real world applications.
